Everything you might want to know before your first class or social.
Indoswing is a swing dance community in Jakarta, founded in 2015 by a handful of dancers who fell in love with swing jazz and wanted to share the joy of Lindy Hop. Today we run regular classes and social dances, and organize events and collaborations with local and international dancers and musicians.
Lindy Hop is the original partner swing dance, born in the late 1920s in Harlem, New York, alongside jazz music. It's energetic, improvised, and built around the swingout. It belongs to the swing family of dances, together with Solo Jazz, Tap dance, Balboa and more.
No. Beginner classes start from the very first step, and you don't need to be skilled or flexible, just ready to have fun. You can also try the free 30-minute intro lesson at a social that offers one.
No. Most people come alone. Partners rotate during class, and at socials anyone can ask anyone to dance. You're welcome to bring a partner too.
Yes! Our Beginner classes are made for people who have never danced before. Start there, and once you're comfortable with the basics, move on to L1. Socials are a great place to practice, with people who were beginners too.
At a class: arrive about 10 minutes early to check in and meet people. You'll pick a role, lead or follow (not sure? pick either, plenty of dancers learn both), and partners rotate throughout the class.
At a social: if there's an intro lesson, it runs for 30 minutes starting at the scheduled time. After that it's a dance party: anyone can ask anyone to dance, and it's fine to say no.
For both:
We teach Lindy Hop and Solo Jazz, at four levels: Beginner, L1, L1+ and L2. Some classes are a single session; others are a series of sessions that build on each other.
See what's coming up on the Classes page.
If you're new, start with a Beginner class. Once you're comfortable with the basics, move on to L1. Not sure where you fit? Ask us on WhatsApp and we'll help you pick.
Yes. Most people come alone, and partners rotate during class, so you'll dance with everyone. When you register, you pick a role: lead or follow. Roles aren't bound by gender.
Comfortable clothes you can move in. You'll be stepping, turning and warming up, so something light works best. And bring water!
Shoes you can turn in. Smooth soles are best; grippy sneakers make turning harder. You don't need special dance shoes to start.
You can register for a single session in the middle of a series, but the teacher builds on earlier sessions and won't repeat them. If you're new to the topic, start from session 1 or book the full series. Learned it before, or not sure? Ask us on WhatsApp first.
Let us know on WhatsApp as soon as you can. Our team may be able to move your registration to another session. Each registration can be rescheduled up to 2 times.
You can't change or cancel a registration yourself on the website yet. Message us on WhatsApp and our team will help.
Yes. You can register for classes and socials without an account. With a free account, you can see all your registrations in one place.
We accept bank transfer. After registering, transfer the exact amount shown and upload your transfer receipt on your registration page. Our team then verifies it.
Visiting from overseas? For paid socials, you can choose to pay in cash to the DJ at the event instead.
You can join the waitlist from the class page, and we'll reach out if a spot opens up. If a class fills up after you register but before your transfer receipt arrives, you'll be moved to the waitlist and our team will contact you about your transfer.
Our classes and socials take place at different venues in Jakarta. Each class and social page shows its location, with a link to open it in Maps.
The location is on the class or social's page, with an "Open in Maps" link for directions. It's also in your registration confirmation email.
Upcoming classes are on the Classes page and socials on the Socials page. We also share updates on Instagram.
Just come dance! Join a class or a social and say hi. This community doesn't belong only to the committee, but to everyone who steps on the floor. Create an account to keep track of your registrations, and follow us on Instagram to stay updated.
We work with venues, brands, festivals and creators: community socials and themed nights, festivals and corporate events, and performances, music videos and other productions. See what we can do together on our Partnership page, then message us on WhatsApp with your idea.
Message us on WhatsApp, or find us on Instagram. You can also talk to our teachers or any team member at a class or social.
If something made you feel unsafe or uncomfortable, tell our Safe Space team. You can stay anonymous.

Social Dance
A social is a dance party where you practice what you've learned with anyone in the room, or just hang out and enjoy the music. Most regular socials start with a free 30-minute intro lesson for beginners, and some have a live performance.

Absolutely! Join the free 30-minute intro lesson at the start of the social to learn your first steps, then try them on the dance floor. Look for "Intro lesson available" on the social's page, and tick the intro lesson box when you register.
No. At socials, people dance with lots of different partners, not just the one they came with. Anyone can ask anyone to dance.
Comfortable clothes and shoes you can turn in. Some socials have a dress code; if so, it's shown on the social's page.
Yes, please register on the social's page before you come. That's also where you sign up for the intro lesson, which can fill up.
Yes! Most people come by themselves. Say hi, ask someone to dance, or join the intro lesson to meet people from the start.
Read our full Code of Conduct.
You can still register for the social, and join the intro lesson on the spot if someone drops out. If you do have a spot, arrive on time: if you're late, your spot goes to someone on the intro lesson waitlist.
