A community of people who love to swing dance, and want to share it.
Indoswing’s roots date back to 2016, when Elsie, a Canadian educator living in Jakarta, introduced Lindy Hop to the city by hosting its very first classes and socials. When she returned home to Canada in 2017, the community fell into hiatus for nearly a year and a half.
The revival came in mid-2018. Reconnecting through a pop-up workshop by visiting dancer Akul and a local jazz performance by Nial Djuliarso at @america, a core group of 8 passionate dancers decided to bring the scene back to life. Their initial commitment was simple: consistency. By establishing a fixed weekly social, starting at Artoz Bar, the small group shared their love for swing. By refocusing the community through Instagram and starting community-led classes and recurring socials, Indoswing began to take root.
By 2019, the community was gaining traction, earning media coverage from outlets such as Media Indonesia and performing at iconic spots like M Bloc Space. Though the 2020 pandemic temporarily paused indoor activities and cost the community many of its expat members, once restrictions slowly eased, the community adapted with outdoor socials at GBK Aquatic Stadium before fully returning to classrooms in late 2021.
What started with a small group of volunteers has now evolved into a structured community keen on sharing the joy of Lindy Hop and swing jazz through regular classes and social dances, and organizes events and collaborations with local and international dancers and musicians. Members of Indoswing have also gone on to create sister communities such as Blues Junction Jakarta, jkt.balboa, and Bali Lindy Circle.
